The recycling project installs 6 unique public recycling bins in high traffic public spaces in the town of Twisp. The goal is to reduce waste while establishing a highly visible symbol of Twisp’s commitment to recycling and public art. The receptacles are not for household recycling, but encourage pedestrians to recycle responsibly.

The project was launched on Wednesday, November 30 in downtown Twisp.

Unique to the project is that six local artists have created original public art pieces from each receptacle through various mediums. The project is a collaborative effort between capital sponsors, business sponsors and local artists. CAPITAL SPONSORS: the Town of Twisp, Recycling Roundup, Methow Arts Alliance, Methow Recycles, and Methow Resource Recovery.

BUSINESS SPONSORS and ARTISTS are paired as follows: STEVE WARD [METAL]- Blue Star Coffee Roasters + Glover Street Market, LAURA GUNNIP [PAINT]- Confluence Gallery + Peligro Art Studio, TORI KARPENKO [PAINT]- Twisp River Pub + North Cascades Fly Fishing, TANIA GONALEZ ORTEGA [PAINT]-Twisp Orchid + New Dimensions, NICOLE RINGGOLD [MOSAIC ]- KTRT-97.5fm, The Root + Medicine Wheel, MARY POWELL [PAINT]- NCNB + Methow Valley News.

RECEPTACLES

Methow Resource Recovery has donated 55 gallon drums and Barry Stromberger fabricated them to make them suitable recycling receptacles. On Glover Street, barrels are paired with trash cans so that users will dispose of items appropriately. Methow Arts Alliance coordinated the creation of original public art pieces from the group of six local artists who have transformed each receptacle through different mediums, ranging from paint to metal work to mosaic. Methow Recycle Roundup will provide service collection (see below).

SERVICE

Methow Recycling Roundup will provide full service collection and sorting of the material accumulated in all public recycling barrels. Collection frequency will be seasonally adjusted to meet demand (estimated to range between one and two collections per week). Recyclables will be hauled to Methow Recycles in Twisp. Non-recyclables will be placed in Town garbage bins. Town staff will not have any responsibility for maintaining the recycling barrels. The addition of recycling service will save town staff time and reduce the cost of garbage disposal. The monthly recycling service fees will be paid by business sponsors who will have their business represented and marketed through artwork on each receptacle.
